About Windward

In many churches, community service and missions are important to the hearts of believers. First Assembly of God's Windward region in Kahalu'u — under the leadership of Pastor Janet Kusuhara — has encouraged members to reach out to its neighbors, such as the residents of Hookipa Housing.

One of Windward's major projects has been volunteer work at Hookipa Housing, a place rife with drug use and criminal activity. Members have been lending a helping hand by cleaning and painting the buildings, parking lots and grounds. A team of church volunteers have also been working with the housing's community association to provide movie nights for the residents, with the church supplying popcorn and shave ice.

Through these efforts, members believe that they are changing lives for the cause of Christ. The Windward congregation also helps to collect food for the church's Food for Friends ministry, and holds its own season-themed events such as Christmas Luaus and Easter Egg hunts. This past year, they held their first-ever Spring Festival at Waiahole Beach Park, where members were able to minister to hundreds of lives.

Through God's blessing, we were able to acquire land adjacent to the Windward regional center, and currently there are plans to build a new sanctuary, administration building and retreat center there.
